Top American Jewish Leader Calls on Incoming Trump Administration to Show Strength, Stand Up to Iran

Algemeiner

There are numerous steps President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration could take to diminish the threats posed by the Islamic Republic, a top US Jewish leader told The Algemeiner on Tuesday.

“We really have to stand up to Iran,” Malcolm Hoenlein — the executive vice president of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations — said. “The Iranians have to know that the US is not going to tolerate any violations of the nuclear deal, and they will be held to account. Terrorists tend to probe for weakness, and if they believe the West is weak in responses, then they will exploit it. If they run into strength and resistance, then they will adjust accordingly.”

Commentary

By Jonathan S. Tobin: When Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said yesterday that the president-elect had been talking privately about moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in the weeks since the election, a long-dormant issue sprang to life. Can Donald Trump get away with altering a longstanding U.S. policy by recognizing at least the partial sovereignty of Israel over Jerusalem, a change the foreign policy establishment has told us would lead a cataclysm?

Israel on Monday became the first country after the United States to receive the U.S.-built F-35 stealth jet which will increase its ability to attack distant targets, including Iran.

The much-hyped arrival of the first two fighter jets was overshadowed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s tweet that Lockheed Martin’s (LMT.N) whole F-35 project was too expensive, and the delivery was delayed for hours by bad weather preventing their take-off from Italy.

Netanyahu Set to Embark on Rare Trip to Muslim Countries

Posted on Categories News
Times of Israel

In an effort to reach out to moderate Muslim countries, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is slated Tuesday morning to take off for a historic two-day visit to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. He will thus become the first sitting Israeli prime minister to visit the region in almost 25 years of diplomatic relations between Jerusalem and the former Soviet Republics of Central Asia.

Both countries are important allies. Azerbaijan, which has a long border with Iran, is a secular state that has long had warm relations with Israel. Nearly 98 percent of its 10 million citizens are Muslim, the vast majority of them Shiites. Baku is one of Israel’s main trading partners, buying weapons systems and providing the Jewish state with the lion’s share of its oil. Israeli trade with Azerbaijan is said to be significantly higher than with France, for example.

A top adviser to President-elect Donald Trump said moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem is a major priority.

“That is a very big priority for this president-elect, Donald Trump,” Kellyanne Conway told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt during his radio show Monday, according to Politico.
